Tairraz II, Georges Two mountaineers on the summit of a pinnacle, Mont Blanc Massif. 1950. Vintage gelatin silver print on Kodak paper. 23.8 x 17.8 cm (sheet 29 x 23 cm). Photographer's stamp on the reverse. The Tairraz family of Chamonix established a remarkable tradition of Alpine photography spanning several generations. In 1857, Joseph Tairraz began making daguerreotypes and opened a studio offering souvenir portraits and mountain views to tourists and mountaineers. His son, Georges I, trained with Pierre Petit in Paris before taking over the family studio around 1890. Georges II carried on this legacy into the 20th century, combining photography and mountaineering in his images of the Mont Blanc Massif and its climbers. – Corners slightly bumped, edges slightly buckled, and a few surface marks in the upper margin; minimal silver mirroring in the shadow areas, more visible at an angle; otherwise, a fine tonal print in very good condition.
