Robertson, James Ste Sophie (Ox Carts in front of Hagia Sophia, Constantinople). 1853. Albumenized salted paper print. 23.7 x 28 cm. Signed, titled, and "No. 57" on the negative in the lower corners, mounted on cream card. Robertson, an engraver at the Imperial Ottoman Mint, established a photographic studio in Pera in 1853. His early views of Constantinople—published as individual prints and in albums—were among the first comprehensive photographic surveys of the Ottoman capital and circulated widely in Europe. Here, Hagia Sophia’s monumental architecture is set against the everyday cart traffic of the surrounding street, uniting the landmark with urban life in a characteristic view of the city. – Mount with a few foxing spots and light discoloration along the upper and lower edges; print with a few small spots in the sky area and light crease marks; otherwise a fine print with rich reddish-brown tones in very good condition.
