Löcherer, Alois Portraits of Munich artists: August Klotz, Johann Jakob Eberhardt, Heinrich Kohler, and Joseph Bernhardt. 1848–1849. 4 salted-paper prints from calotype negatives, mounted on gray card with double pencil borders. Each measuring between 17.5 x 14.2 cm and 24 x 19.5 cm (mounts 35 x 29 cm). With pencil inscriptions and biographical dates on the reverse, including “Maler Klotz / August (1808–1853),” “Painter Eberhard / Johann Jakob Eberhardt (1820–1889),” “Heinrich Kohler (1808–1885),” and “Painter Bernhard / Joseph (1805–1885).” This group belongs to Löcherer’s remarkably early series of portraits of artists working in Munich, created in his studio before 1850. August Klotz was a history painter and curator of the Munich Kunstverein and the royal collections; Johann Jakob Eberhardt combined art-historical writing with genre painting; Heinrich Kohler was a painter and lithographer; and Joseph Bernhardt was a portrait painter who had trained in Paris under Paul Delaroche before establishing a painting school in Munich. – Mounts show slight foxing, soiling, and edge wear; prints show fading, scattered small stains, and surface marks; the Kohler and Bernhardt portraits have corner creases and buckling, the latter with a noticeable diagonal crease in the upper right corner, but are otherwise in good condition.
