VON GLOEDEN / TAORMINA (SICILIA)” studio stamp and numbered “1590” in blue crayon on the reverse. Throughout his Taormina body of work, Gloeden used local models, outdoor settings, drapery, and classical attributes to create photographs that straddle the line between portraiture and tableau. Wreaths, antique costumes, and architectural props allowed contemporary subjects to assume idealized, timeless identities. This close study captures the characteristic tension in his work between the model’s individual presence and the classicizing fiction of the scene. – Light handling and surface marks, a few tiny spots, and minimal edge wear; otherwise, a fine, warm-toned print in very good condition.
