Frank Lloyd Wright Bookcase from the K.C. DeRhodes House, South Bend, Indiana Frank Lloyd Wright Bookcase from the K.C. DeRhodes House, South Bend, Indiana, circa 1906 Leaded glass, oak 53-3/4 x 48-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches (136.5 x 123.2 x 31.8 cm) Built in 1906 for Kersey C. and Laura DeRhodes in South Bend, Indiana, the K. C. DeRhodes House is a compelling example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie architecture and the first of his houses constructed in the state. On a relatively narrow city lot, Wright created a home that feels expansive through its low roof, broad eaves, strong horizontal lines, and bands of windows that carry the eye across the building. Its leaded glass is especially distinctive. In the upper portions of the windows, tightly grouped, angled triangles gather into a lively geometric pattern; beneath them, slender vertical rectangles draw the design downward. Repeated across the house, these forms give the glass a sense of movement while preserving the clarity and order of the architecture. The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust associates the windows’ unusual design with Marion Mahony, whose substantial contribution to the project reminds us that the house was also a creative achievement of Wright’s Oak Park studio. The attention to glass continues indoors, where leaded glass appears in the built-in furnishings and cabinetry, bringing the decorative language of the windows into the rooms themselves. Wright also designed furniture for the house, treating its contents as part of the architectural composition. This relationship between window, furnishing, and structure is what makes the DeRhodes House so memorable: the triangular glass patterns reward close inspection, yet they also belong to a larger, carefully coordinated vision for daily life.
