Wellenstein, Walter "Mask Steps Out from the Backdrop" Oil on canvas. 1954. 29 x 35.5 cm. Signed “Wellenstein” in blue with a brush on the lower right and dated; signed “WALTER WELLENSTEIN” in black with a felt-tip pen on the reverse, dated, titled, and marked with the location “Berlin.” Walter Wellenstein is considered one of the defining figures in the reconstruction of Berlin’s cultural landscape after World War II. As early as the 1930s, he created his first mask paintings, influenced by James Ensor; Wellenstein deliberately draws on these in this theatrical depiction of a grotesque, heavily made-up figure, thereby reaffirming his enduring preference for the motif of the masquerade.
