Topor, Roland "UBU, Robe de chambre" Pen and ink in black, with watercolor, on vellum. Circa 1991. 26 x 17.4 cm. Signed "Topor" in pen and ink at the bottom left; partially titled in pencil at the center right. The French artist depicts the grotesque figure of King Ubu with a massive body and a pear-shaped head, rendering the internal structures with a multitude of vibrating hatches (cf. the similar sketch in: *La vocation théatrale de Roland Topor*, Munich 1994, ill. p. 46). Topor created an entire visual universe in the form of numerous decorative, set, and costume designs for the opera buffa “Ubu Rex,” with music by Krzysztof Penderecki and a libretto by Jerzy Jarocki, based on Alfred Jarry’s play “Ubu Roi” (1896), which premiered at the Munich Opera on July 6, 1991.
