Schumacher, Ernst Mountain Lake Pen and ink in black on vellum. 1959. 49.8 x 61.8 cm. Signed “Ernst Schumacher” and dated in black pen at the bottom left. A multitude of short, hook-shaped hatches creates a shimmering, vibrant image of the mountain landscape. Schumacher, who had been a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts since 1947, received a fellowship at the German Academy Villa Massimo in 1958. The date of the drawing suggests that it was created in Italy during this period.
