Santarossa, Hella [*] "Sunset, U.S. Flag Series" Dispersion on sturdy vellum. 1980. 57 x 76 cm. Monogrammed “H.S.” in blue with a brush in the lower right and dated; signed “Hella Santarossa” in black with a felt-tip pen on the reverse and titled. A vibrant, full-page composition. Beginning in 1974, Hella Santarossa—who had previously trained as a stained-glass artist—studied under Hödicke at the Berlin University of the Arts. Actively involved in the founding of the Galerie am Moritzplatz and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, she repeatedly breaks down the boundaries between established art movements in her work and pursues cross-art projects. Hella Santarossa was one of the first German female artists to present the new Berlin art movement of the “Junge Wilde” at the Goethe-Institut in California in 1980.
