Bluth, Manfred "Moonrise by the Sea" Oil on canvas. 1958/64. 65 x 72 cm. Signed “Bluth” in beige with a brush in the lower right corner and dated; signed again, dated, and titled in black with a brush on the back of the stretcher, and marked “Cat. 2” on the frame (by another hand). The pale light of the rising moon casts cold, shimmering reflections onto the karstic rocky landscape, where the microscopic and macroscopic—the finest details and dark, amorphous forms—merge. In 1947, Manfred Bluth was a master student under Willi Geiger in Munich. As early as 1963, the Gerda Bassenge Gallery in Berlin organized one of the artist’s first solo exhibitions.
