8096 - Orlik, Emil

Orlik, Emil Self-portrait Etching with drypoint and roulette in brown on wove paper. 1910. 24.7 x 20.9 cm (40.5 x 30 cm). Signed "Orlik" and inscribed "1. Zust.". Voss-Andreae R 184. This wonderful self-portrait of Orlik at the age of 40 shows him in austere profile with glasses and beard. It is almost reminiscent of the classical Roman imperial portraits on ancient coins. In the same year, he undertook a trip to Florence, where he had the opportunity to study ancient works of art. In the present concise state print, which remains unknown to Voss-Andreae, Orlik demonstrates his talent as an etcher, masterfully working out contours with drypoint and filling surfaces with roulette. Splendid, wonderfully expressive and burnished impression with differentiated plate dirt, clearly defined platemark and with the probably full margin, right and bottom with the scoop margin. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the state of preservation is only stated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
