Hofmaier 203 B a (of B b). The outstanding pianist Fridel Battenberg was the wife of Ugi Battenberg, a fellow student of Beckmann’s at the art school in Weimar. After the artist suffered a nervous breakdown during his military service in 1915, he was discharged from military service. Deeply traumatized by his wartime experiences, Beckmann did not return to his wife and child in Berlin, but instead went to Frankfurt am Main, where the Battenbergs took him in. He painted and drew both of them on several occasions. Published by I. B. Neumann, Berlin.
