Christ Pantocrator with a Metal Riza - 19th Century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 35.5 x 30 cm This work fits firmly within the established iconographic tradition of Christ Pantocrator—Lord of Creation and Divine Judge—depicted in a frontal, half-length pose. With His right hand, emerging from the folds of a garment rendered in repoussé with dense, raised highlights, the Redeemer performs the classic gesture of blessing according to the Orthodox rite; in His left hand, He holds an open Book of the Gospels, its pages inscribed with finely engraved Old Church Slavonic characters. The visible painted elements—focused exclusively on the face and hands, following the late-imperial practice of painting only those areas of flesh left exposed by the metal covering (*podorozhnaya*)—exhibit a precise use of chiaroscuro in warm, amber tones. Subtle, blended transitions lend intensity and a stern, solemn quality to Christ’s hieratic, penetrating gaze. A feature of exceptional formal distinction is the majestic, radiating nimbus superimposed upon the background plate; it is adorned throughout with opaque and translucent polychrome enamel—in shades of turquoise, cobalt blue, white, and crimson—featuring stylized geometric and floral motifs characteristic of the historical revival style prevalent in the workshops of Moscow and St. Petersburg between 1890 and 1917. The outer frame of the *riza* (metal cover), defined by a flattened round arch that evokes sacred architecture, is enriched with neoclassical reliefs and geometric repoussé ornamentation; decorative rosettes and interlaced patterns, reminiscent of the ancient Russian style, stand out in the corners. Along the lateral margins and corresponding to the architectural framework, one can see full-length figures of saints standing within embossed niches; these serve as intercessors and patron protectors. H.E. Most Rev. Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time; there are minor losses to the enamels.
