Russian Icon Depicting the Holy Martyrs of Edessa (Gurias, Samonas, and Abibus) with Saint Euphemia - 19th century Tempera on panel Height x width: 34.5 x 28 cm. This icon depicts a subject deeply rooted in family devotion and the protection of the home. The composition features a row of four standing figures in the foreground, depicted in a pose of solemn prayer and intercession, gazing upward. From left to right, the three Holy Martyrs of Edessa are depicted: Saint Samonas, Saint Gurias, and Saint Abibus, portrayed in traditional vestments. Beside them, on the right, Saint Euphemia rounds out the line of protectors with her head veiled in white and a red cloak, depicted with her hands raised in a gesture of supplication. The faces of the sacred figures, painted with minute and hieratic features, stand out against the golden background. In the upper part of the panel, within a red ogival frame that suggests the opening of the heavens and is supported by a curtain of dark clouds, the half-length figure of God the Father emerges, extending his hands to bless the saints and the ideal devotee. The artwork is distinguished by a dense and evocative craquelure in both the ground (levkas) and the paint, combined with a warm and uniform period patina that enhances its appeal to collectors. Item condition rating: **** good. The icon is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time; restorations.
