Mother of God of the Sign (Znamenie) - 19th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 36 x 30.4 cm A Byzantine model of great theological solemnity, linked to Isaiah’s prophecy concerning the Incarnation. The composition is highly symmetrical, featuring a total of six sacred figures distributed across the central core, the background, and the outer borders. At the center stands the monumental figure of the Virgin Mary, depicted in full face from the waist up, her arms raised and palms turned outward in the ancient gesture of the orans—a symbol of prayer and intercession. She wears a purple maphorion (mantle), highlighted with golden threads and adorned with the traditional stars signifying her virginity. Upon her breast, enclosed within a perfect circular clipeus—symbolizing both the virginal womb and the heavens—appears Christ Emmanuel (the infant Jesus, portrayed with the features and wisdom of a young adult). The young Savior gazes toward the viewer; his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, while his left hand holds a scroll of the Scriptures. Against the golden background, flanking the Virgin’s halo, two six-winged seraphim hover: one, a burning red, embodies the fire of divine love, while the other, shrouded in deep black, evokes the mystery of the unknowable and the memory of a lost light. Finally, along the red lateral margins of the panel, small vertical compartments are arranged: on the left appears a Guardian Angel (or archangel) in light, golden robes, while on the right, a holy ascetic nun is depicted—dressed in dark garments and a monastic veil—engaged in prayer and turned toward the central mystery of the Incarnation. His Excellency the Most Reverend Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Minor restorations; woodworm damage has been stabilized.
