Seeger, 14th June 2001, lot 51 (part lot); Private Collection, UK Note: the two lots by Augustus John were previously owned by Stanley J. Seeger, who lived in London from the 1980s and amassed one of the most important collections of the 20th century, which including everything from Francis Bacon to Pablo Picasso to Paul Gauguin.Augustus John became an official war artist in 1917 and was specifically attached to the Canadian forces, creating a large number of important portraits of soldiers and the unfinished mural The Canadians Opposite Lens’. This mural now hangs in the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa. Other works from this period are now in the Tate collection and National Gallery of Canada.
