Peter Lanyon, British 1918-1964 - Abstract composition in red, green and blue, 1964; crayon and gouache on paper, 35 x 24 cm (ARR) Provenance: Alan John Ross (1922-2001) Note: with thanks to Toby Treves, author of ‘Peter Lanyon: Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings and Three-Dimensional Works’, for his assistance with the cataloguing of this work. Lanyon and Ross knew one another and Ross also bought the oil painting 'Clevedon Lake, 1964' in 1972, so it is possible this work was purchased at the same time. Peter Lanyon studied under Borlase Smart, but came under the direct influence of Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo and Ben Nicholson after moving to St Ives in 1939. As a painter of landscapes that tended heavily to abstraction, his body of work is some of the most original and important reappraisals of modernism in painting. Held in acclaim amongst the pivotal artists that emerged in post-war Britain, his work was honoured in a large-scale retrospective between 2010 and 2011 in Tate St Ives.
