Jean Cassarini Harlequin and Mandolin, c. 1965 Watercolor Signed and inscribed by hand: “With best regards to Yves” Dimensions: Sheet: 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: TBD Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance; the dedications place the collector in the casino circles of the Riviera and Dinard). Description: A harlequin playing the mandolin—a recurring motif from the Commedia dell’Arte in the artist’s work—painted in watercolor in the collector’s guestbook. Born in Nice in 1910, Jean Cassarini trained at the city’s School of Decorative Arts, worked as a newspaper illustrator and theater set designer, and was one of the founders of UMAM (Mediterranean Union for Modern Art), the Riviera’s first modernist association—which placed him at the heart of Yves Guérin’s circle in Nice. Hand-signed to the collector.
