SCHENK (1653–1713), Map of Lille, military map, 1708, copper engraving Pieter Schenk (born around 1653 in Elberfeld—died 1713 in Amsterdam): Plan of Lille, Cartographic Military Map, 1708, copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on laid paper Inscription: The copper engraving was produced in red, a color used only rarely and for special occasions, especially in the 18th century. Inscribed in the lower right cartouche: “Situation of the area around Lille with the trench lines of our two armies, as well as the French forces stationed between Selins and Herins. Sept. 15, 1708.” Signed on the plate with an indication of place: “Pet. Schenk exc. Amst C. P.". Date: 1708 Description: From: Frederik the Fifth’s Atlas, vol. 12, plate 58. Peter Schenk the Elder was a German engraver and cartographer from Elberfeld, now part of Wuppertal. Around 1684 he moved to Amsterdam and became a pupil of Gerard Valck, specializing in mezzotint; he traveled to Leipzig and Berlin. Until his death in 1718/19, he published numerous maps and illustrations.
