J. ERHARD (1795–1822), A Traveler Returning Home to an Old Castle, 1815, Etching Johann Christoph Erhard (1795 Nuremberg – 1822 Rome): A Traveler Returning Home to an Old Castle, 1815, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Catalog Raisonné: , 54, III/IV Inscription: Signed and dated at the bottom center of the printing plate: "JC Erhard inv et fec 1815" Date: 1815 Description: The etching depicts an idyllic landscape with a striking, round tower at its center. The tower has a pointed roof and several small windows. In front of the tower stands a solitary figure wrapped in a long coat, holding a walking stick and approaching the building. The ruins of an old wall are visible in the foreground, surrounded by vegetation. The scene is complemented by a gentle hill in the background, which emphasizes the depth of the space. The lighting is soft, with a harmonious balance between light and shadow. The composition creates a calm atmosphere, while the detailed lines highlight the textures of stone, wood, and foliage.
