W. DREWES (1899–1985), Landscape along Catskill Creek, 1944, Chalk Werner Drewes (1899, Canig (Lower Lusatia) – 1985, Reston (Virginia)): Landscape at Catskill Creek, USA, 1944, chalk Technique: Chalk on paper Inscription: Signed lower right: “Drewes.” Inscribed on the reverse in the artist’s hand: “It’s so beautiful right near our farm on Catskill Creek.” Dated lower right: “44”. Date: 1944 Description: A wonderfully moving and expressive sketch of the landscape at Catskill Creek, where the artist owned a small farm. The picturesque landscape along the small river and its surroundings often served as motifs for Drewes’s works. Werner Drewes studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the 1920s under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger, and László Moholy-Nagy, among others. He traveled throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. Drewes left Germany in 1930 and moved to New York City, where he taught at Columbia University, among other institutions. Beginning in 1946, he served as a professor of design at Washington University in St. Louis and became friends with Max Beckmann.
