P. SCHROETER (*1866), Seated Self-Portrait with a Sketchpad and a Pipe, 1911, Pencil Paul K. Alfred Schroeter (1866 Posen – 1946 Linow): Seated Self-Portrait with a Sketchpad and a Pipe, 1911, Pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Stamp: Estate stamp on the reverse, Paul Schröter. 20th century Date: 1911 Description: Full-length self-portrait of the artist, sitting in a chair with the sketchpad resting on his knee. Provenance: From the artist’s estate. Person: Depicted: Paul Schroeter (1866 Posen – 1946 Linow) Paul Schroeter was born in Kempen (Posen province) in 1866. After moving to Hamburg at a young age, Schroeter went to Düsseldorf to study painting in 1885, where he studied under Eugen Duecker, Eduard von Gebhardt, and Peter Janssen. From 1892 to 1896, he spent time in Belgium, Flanders, and Holland on several occasions. He spent the winter months in Munich. In 1893, he exhibited his first works at an exhibition at the Munich “Künstlerhaus.” This public debut immediately brought him the success he had longed for. He went on to join the Munich Secession, participated in a group exhibition at the Hamburg Kunsthalle through Alfred Lichtwark, and in 1895 he exhibited at the Munich Secession. During this period, he also devoted himself intensively to 17th-century Dutch painting and to Rembrandt, to whom he paid homage in his many self-portraits, some of which were unsparing. In 1901, he went to Worpswede on the recommendation of his friend Fritz Overbeck. After a few years, he moved with his family to Bremen. In 1908, the artist finally moved to Berlin. There, he devoted himself primarily to portrait painting. In 1914–15, he lost a leg in an accident. His years in Berlin, however, were overshadowed by constant financial worries and a lack of major commissions and artistic successes. During his time in Berlin, he was also engaged in the development of new, fast-drying oil paints. In 1943, the Schroeters’ entire property was destroyed in a bombing raid. In 1946, the painter died in Linow (Rheinsberg, Brandenburg). Despite his initial great successes and close artistic friendships, Paul Schroeter was not destined to pursue a successful career as an artist. The drawings presented here from his estate show that he certainly would have been capable of doing so. It is precisely in this intense self-examination that the artist makes a lasting impression. It is precisely in works such as these that the great charm of discovering an unjustly forgotten, highly talented, and once celebrated painter lies. Keywords: Portrait study, study sheet, self-portrait, artist, 20th century, Realism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 33.9 cm x 26.4 cm (13.3 x 10.4 in) Condition: Very good condition. Overall in very good condition, consistent with its age. Slightly stained and browned at the margins. Slightly bumped and creased in places.
