M. SAVIGNY (1831–1905), A House by the Water with a Castle in the Distance, 1844, Pencil Marie von Savigny (1831, Boitzenburg – 1905): House on the Water with a Distant Castle, 1844, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Inscription: Inscribed and dated in black ink lower right: “Marie 44.” Date: 1844 Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831, Boitzenburg – 1905), is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Center Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814–1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. It is not the stately castle with towers and annexes on the distant hill that takes center stage in this drawing, but the small half-timbered house by the wayside. Resembling a distant outbuilding or inn on the way to the next village, the small house stands atop a high brick base. Although somewhat inconsistent in its structure and façade design, it nevertheless seems to promise a cozy welcome, as can be seen from the figures resting casually in front of it and the unobtrusive smoke rising from the chimney.
