Leißner, Andreas "Waiting I" Oil on burlap, mounted on an MDF panel. 2013. 103 x 153 cm. Signed “Andreas Leißner” in ballpoint pen on the reverse, dated and titled, with a list of materials. Broad-leaved plantain grows undaunted from the cracks in the pavement, and almost as if mirroring the two little plants, the two young men sit on the curb of the otherwise deserted street under the full moon. Leißner depicts the life-size figures in a realistic style; despite the nocturnal setting, a bright light falls on them from the front left. He skillfully stages the two men theatrically, as if on a stage, yet at the same time uses the warmth of this chiaroscuro to create an intimate, almost meditative atmosphere that relativizes the frightening effect of the rifle slung over the left man’s shoulder. In his rigorously composed images, Andreas Leißner frequently documents the isolation of the individual in the modern world. Initially trained by André Krigar, Leißner studied under Volker Stelzmann at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1999 to 2004.
