7328 - Sprotte, Siegward

Sprotte, Siegward "Studio Conversations from Qumran to Kampen" Watercolor on CM Fabriano vellum. 1985. 56 x 76 cm. Signed "S. Sprotte" in black pen at the bottom left, dated and titled. With the title of his painting, Sprotte bridges a wide gap between the ancient archaeological site and life on Sylt, underscoring the timelessness of the natural scene. Beginning in 1945, Sprotte spent half the year in Kampen on Sylt. There he created numerous watercolors characterized by an extremely minimalist, gestural, calligraphic brushstroke. Here, short, staccato-like brushstrokes placed side by side harmonize beautifully with the gracefully curving lines of the dune grasses, and summery, luminous colors complement the deep, dark contrasts.
