Prem, Heimrad "Felt Happiness" Gouache and opaque white on leather-covered cardboard mounted on hardboard. 1972. 71.3 x 101.5 cm. Signed “H Prem” in pencil and dated on the lower left; titled and marked “1100” on the reverse. Dornbacher 606. After studying painting at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and sculpture at the Berlin University of the Arts under Ernst Schumacher, Heimrad Prem founded the avant-garde group “Spur” in 1958 with H.P. Zimmer, Lothar Fischer, and Helmut Sturm founded the avant-garde group “Spur,” a working and living community that rebelled against the state and society through its anarchist proclamations. The year 1972 marked a period of upheaval and transition in his life, both biographically and artistically. After experimenting intensively with LSD and other intoxicants in the late 1960s and spending time in the hospital in 1971 following a suicide attempt, the year 1972 marked a new beginning for him, both artistically and mentally. Prem used 1972 to regroup artistically by reevaluating and further developing old, familiar motifs. Dynamic compositions such as this one, in which forms interlock within a luminous, powerful, and high-contrast color palette, remained a defining feature of his visual language.
