Vostell, Wolf Assemblage Gouache, cement, and light bulb filled with aluminum foil, mounted on offset paper, center-folded, mounted on thick cardboard, and securely mounted in an object frame. 1995. Approx. 39.4 x 54.4 x 7.5 cm. Monogrammed “V” in black with a brush and dated on the lower right. A typical assemblage from the early 1990s featuring a combination of everyday objects, collage, and gestural overpainting characteristic of Vostell: The three-dimensionally protruding light bulb, as well as the tactile surface texture of the gray mass applied with a brush, break through the strictly two-dimensional representation and lend the work a peculiarly unsettling, object-like presence. Vostell is one of the pioneers of the environment, video art, the happening, and the Fluxus movement. At the heart of his artistic practice lies an examination of reality and the impact of mass media. Reacting directly to current world events, he addressed social injustices and, in particular, grappled with the repression and forgetting of war and violence.
