Erb, Leo "Line Drawing" Corrugated cardboard, glued and painted white, mounted in a white wooden frame. 1980. 60 x 80 cm (frame). Signed “Erb” in pencil on the back of the frame, dated and marked with a directional arrow and on an adhesive label, titled, and accompanied by the dimensions. The "Linienbild" acquires an intensely textural character through the restlessly shimmering, densely layered horizontal structures of the corrugated cardboard, creating a regular, rhythmic order. Leo Erb’s entire body of work is defined by two elements that became his “signature” and helped him achieve international success: the color white and the line. Beginning in 1947, the artist from the Saarland created his first linear paper cuts and line drawings. In Saarbrücken, he studied under Boris Kleint, a proponent of the Bauhaus philosophy, with whom he later founded the “neue gruppe saar.” His artistic career spans more than six decades, and many of his works are on display in national and international museums and galleries. In 1977, he participated in the 6th documenta in Kassel.
