7225 - Metzkes, Harald

Metzkes, Harald Flower Still Life Oil on canvas. 1970. 60 x 80 cm. Signed “Metzkes” in brown with a brush in the upper right; on the reverse side of the stretcher (presumably by another hand), inscribed “METZKES,” “HE,” and dated. A wide variety of flower and leaf forms spread out before the artist’s gaze, and he depicts each one in its own unique way, tracing their respective structures with a soft brush generously saturated with paint and setting them in relation to the vividly dynamic, warm brown tones of the background. “The ultimate goal is a culture of painting as a refinement of expressive drawing and color. Refinement here means a clearer delineation of forms, their logical interconnection, and the seamless blending of patches of color and lines. All of this must take place under the dictates of experience, of the enthusiasm for the radiance that envelops all objects (...).” (Harald Metzkes, 1975, cited from harald-metzkes.de, accessed August 25, 2026).
