7210 - Strässer, Herbert

Strässer, Herbert Homage to Schlemmer and Baumeister Bronze with green patina, mounted on a bronze plinth. 1957. 33 x 14 x 9.7 cm. Monogrammed "H. ST" and dated on the lower reverse. This sculpture from Strässer’s early Cubist work illustrates how perceptively the artist captures the forms of the two human figures, which are intimately intertwined. The bronze masterfully combines abstraction with a design clearly based on the human form. The smoothly polished, soft surface, with its alternation between convex and concave, between spherical forms and straight edges, invites touch and is compellingly viewable from all angles. It was only shortly before, in 1955, that Herbert Strässer began creating his first sculptural works, following his involvement with experimental photography under Otto Steinert. “He viewed Cubist sculpture as a guiding principle for the future. Even with forms seemingly reduced to pure ‘signs,’ he initially draws inspiration from nature and the human figure (...)” (Wolfgang Kermer, Herbert Strässer, exhibition catalog, Saarbrücken 1968, n.p.). Strässer’s teacher at the State School of Art and Crafts in Saarbrücken, Hannes Neuner, was a student of Willi Baumeister. A magnificent cast with a beautifully luminous, uniform, and deep green shimmering patina.
