Kaus, Max "Gate near Agropoli" Gouache, black brushstrokes, and colored chalks on vellum. 1968. 64 x 76.5 cm. On the reverse, presumably dated and titled by Sigrid Kaus, and inscribed “Max Kaus” and “ink with colored pencil.” Kaus depicts the gate to the center of the medieval town of Agropoli in a monumental manner from a low angle, simplifying the architectural forms while keeping them clearly recognizable. Located on the Cilento coast in Campania, the town sits on a rocky promontory, which the artist suggests with powerful, deep-black brushstrokes, as he does the city walls and the steps leading up to the gate. The underpainting in a muted pale yellow, applied with a broad brush, bathes the high-contrast scene in a warm southern light.
