7179 - Höch, Hannah

Höch, Hannah Abstract Composition in Green, Red, and White Gouache on sturdy Velin card (with old printing on the reverse). 28 x 28.9 cm. On the reverse, stamped twice with the yellow estate stamp “Hannah Höch Estate, Carlberg-Höch Collection.” Symbolic abbreviations formed by predominantly red brushstrokes—some short, some curved—create a consistently abstracted, sad face with a tear beneath the left eye. Höch chooses a bright, complementary green as the flat background color and adds striking accents with white and dark red contour lines. For this nearly square composition, Höch used the reverse side of an old cardboard box from a seed company dating from 1923/24, with floral motifs printed on the back, which she surely found among her extensive collection of papers at her home in Heiligensee.
