Serna, Ismael González de la Still Life with Lemons Gouache on vellum. 1928. 37.2 x 50.7 cm. Signed "DE LA SERNA" in white with a brush and dated in the lower right corner. Trained at the Academy in Madrid, de la Serna settled in Paris in 1918. Just as he had cultivated contacts in Madrid with future members of the famous “Generation of 1927”—including Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, Rafael Alberti, and Federico García Lorca—he also forged close ties in Paris with renowned artists such as Picasso and Soutine. In 1927, he exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Paul Guillaume. “De la Serna’s paintings are characterized by an abstract style and deal primarily with still lifes and landscapes. (...)
