Iacovleff, Alexandre Portrait of a man, looking slightly to the right Red chalk, partially smudged, on grayish vellum. 1938. 34 x 24.6 cm (mat cutout). Signed “AIacovleff” and dated in red chalk at the bottom left. Iacovleff masterfully captures the still very youthful features of the young man, tracing the softness of the cheeks with delicate strokes of red chalk, accentuating the contrasts in the nose, lips, and ear with more decisive lines, and shapes the hairstyle into ornamental, flowing waves. The pigments, which lie on the paper with a matte, grainy texture, come so close to the radiance of a flesh tone that the skin’s surface seems almost tangible. In contrast, the neck and shoulder areas are merely hinted at with a few swift strokes.
