Lehmann, Jean On the Amper Oil on canvas. 1931. 60 x 70 cm. Signed lower left (scratched into the wet paint) “Jlls” and dated. The summer landscape west of Dachau radiates lushly in fresh shades of blue and green, with the painted surfaces featuring a rich variety of textures. Lehmann captures the confluence of the Amper River below the Gündingen weir in the characteristic vibrant color palette that distinguishes many of his paintings. After World War I, the artist moved to the Dachauer Moos, where this work was also created. During this particularly productive creative period, he exhibited his works at shows organized by the Dachau Artists’ Association, the Munich Secession, and the Munich Glaspalast (see jean-lehmann.ch, accessed 08/04/3036). It was not until 1936 that he moved back to Zurich. The signature abbreviation “JLLS,” which he used to prevent confusion, stands for Jean Lehmann Lucerne St. Moritz/Switzerland.
