Jacobi, Annot (Anna-Ottilie) Beach Still Life (Dead Seagull) Oil on canvas. Probably around 1932. 50 x 66 cm. Signed “ANNOT” in black pen at the lower right; on the reverse of the stretcher, the dimensions are written in blue chalk, and it is labeled “A 11.” The artist captures this macabre, enigmatic subject with the loose, generous brushwork that characterizes her painting and is always somewhat reminiscent of French Impressionism. With her cheerful, sensitively nuanced color palette, she stays true to the summery motif that frequently featured in her work (see Galerie von Abercron, exhibition catalog, Munich 1978, cat. no. 45, ill. p. 40). The artist, who was committed to the pacifist cause, became a member of the Berlin Secession and the executive board of the “Juryfreien.” Her first exhibition at the Neumann-Nierendorf Gallery and the acquisition of several of her paintings by the Berlin National Gallery helped Annot Jacobi achieve her first artistic successes. This painting was created shortly before her emigration to the United States.
