Masjutin, Vasily Nikolayevich [*] Costume design for a woman, backless Watercolor and pencil on sketchbook paper. 1930. 19.3 x 12.4 cm. Dated “30.12.30” on the reverse, presumably in the artist’s own hand. A daring, alluring costume design that appears to leave the upper body completely bare. The Russian artist plays with black ellipses and circular forms as well as with stark black-and-white contrasts. Created just one day before New Year’s Eve 1930, this dynamically stylized design reveals the influence of Art Deco on Masjutins’ work and seems to anticipate the excitement of the New Year’s celebrations.
