Bouzianis, Georgios Walking Nude Watercolor and pencil on vellum. Probably around 1925. Approx. 48 x 32.5 cm. Signed “G Bouzianis” in pencil lower right; inscribed lower left and upper right (illegible); monogrammed “GB” on the reverse. This expressive drawing by the Greek artist demonstrates immense confidence and freedom in the use of line and color. Bouzianis received his training in Athens and Munich; beginning in 1907, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he met his slightly younger fellow student from Athens, Giorgio de Chirico, with whom he shared a studio for a time. In 1909, he went to Berlin to study under Max Liebermann. The Munich galleries Ritthaler and Thannhauser exhibited his paintings. Beginning in 1914, he was a member of the Munich Artists’ Cooperative, and later of the “Munich Secession.” After the horrors of World War I, he turned to Expressionism in 1917; numerous portraits and nudes, mainly of women, served as a means for him to depict the psychological turmoil of the human condition. “Today, Busianis is regarded in Greece as one of the most significant representatives of contemporary Greek painting and one of the first Greek Expressionists.” (See Clara Westendorff, “Jorgos Busianis,” in: Alexandros-Andreas Kyrtsis and Miltos Pechlivanos (eds.), Compendium of German-Greek Interconnections, Nov. 16, 2020, cited from comdeg.eu, accessed Sept. 5, 2026). Under the Nazis, his art was denounced as “degenerate,” and he returned to Greece in 1934.
