Klee, Paul The Sublime Side. Postcard from the Bauhaus Exhibition in Weimar, 1923 Color lithograph on postcard stock. 14.3 x 7.4 cm (15 x 10.5 cm). Postcard imprint on the reverse. Kornfeld 88 III b. Stone by stone, Klee stacks various triangles, squares, and circles on top of one another until, at the top of the tower, one looks through a gate onto “the sublime side.” There, the text “Weimar Bauhaus Exhibition 1923” is inscribed in the stone, and at the bottom is the lettering “Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar Exhibition.” Harmonious in color, yet a structurally precarious composition. Printed using three colored stones in blue, red, and yellow, this postcard is the first of two that Klee designed for the Bauhaus to promote its first major exhibition in 1923. A year later, he designed its counterpart under the title “The Cheerful Side.” Between 1921 and 1923, the Bauhaus masters, together with some of their students, designed a total of 20 artist postcards in the run-up to the Bauhaus exhibition, as well as several hand-watercolored invitation cards (see Lot 7087) for the 1921 Kite Festival and the 1922 Lantern Festival at the Bauhaus. The entire series is now regarded as the beginning of modern graphic design. Beautiful print; colors slightly faded in places; blank on the reverse. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
