Kubin, Alfred Native American Pen and ink in black on cadastral paper. Circa 1909. 29.6 x 39 cm. Signed “Kubin” in pen and ink in black at the lower right. Depictions of fantastical dream visions are characteristic of Alfred Kubin’s work. This drawing also features a strong narrative element. In the dense line work typical of his pieces from around 1910, two horsemen with magnificent feather headdresses can be seen. From a hill, they look down upon a riverbed, on whose banks two small figures with raised arms seem to be calling for help. One of the riders’ horses is already rearing up, as if it were about to gallop down with its rider to those seeking help. The unrealistically elongated proportions of the riders and horses enhance the dreamlike effect of the scene. At the same time, the expressive brushwork underscores its dramatic character.
