Beckmann, Max Self-Portrait from the Front, with a House Gable in the Background Drypoint on vellum. 1918. 30.9 x 25.8 cm (53.6 x 37.7 cm). Signed “Beckmann” in pencil lower right. Edition of 30 numbered copies. Hofmaier 125 II B b. Among Beckmann’s long series of self-portraits, this is certainly the most psychologically compelling: Posed in a frontal stance, facing the viewer directly in a half-length portrait, his brow furrowed, Beckmann’s gaze is intense, stern, almost bitter. It seems as though Beckmann is confronting the viewer with the experiences and fears that the war has left within him. At the same time, his tightly closed mouth and his posture convey determination and self-assertion. The open window and the billowing curtain in the background heighten the painting’s sense of tension. A magnificent, fine print with a velvety edge and full margins, featuring the artist’s mark on two sides.
