Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig David Müller Woodcut on yellowish Velin card. 1919/20. 34 x 29.6 cm (48 x 40 cm). With the signature stamp “EL Kirchner.” Gercken 1094 IV B 2, Dube 409 II B, Söhn HdO 105–6. Kirchner’s finely detailed, fragmented cutting technique in the woodcut “David Müller” creates a nuanced depiction of the elongated male head wearing a cap. The figure and background are intricately interwoven through predominantly linear structures. Kirchner carved the fine lines with a goatsfoot chisel. David Müller was the third son of the owners of the “In den Lärchen” farmstead in Frauenkirch. “The portrait was so important to Kirchner that, when invited to contribute to the Bauhaus portfolios in 1921, he made 110 copies available for this purpose.” (staatsgalerie.de, accessed September 23, 2024). Copy from the edition bearing the monogram in the printing block, printed for Bauhaus Drucke, Neue Europäische Graphik, 5th Portfolio: German Artists, Weimar 1921. This must be one of the prints produced after 1920, as Kirchner’s signature stamp was not used until that year.
