Mosson, George Bouquet in a White Vase Oil on canvas. 82 x 74 cm. Signed "George Mosson" in brown-violet paint in the lower right corner. With a sweeping, loose brushstroke, the artist extends the splashes of color from the flower heads as a compositional element in the background, thereby enhancing the lively radiance of the still life, which shines in vibrant color harmonies. Mosson, one of the few Berlin painters of French origin, was regularly represented at the Berlin Academy exhibitions for many years, primarily with portraits, while in upper-class circles—where he cautiously embraced Impressionist tendencies—he was in demand primarily as a painter of floral still lifes (see Berlin-Brandenburg Artists’ Lexicon, kl-bb.de, accessed September 22, 2026). His works were represented in the National Gallery in Berlin, but they were removed from the exhibition after 1939: “The paintings by George Mosson (Mosessohn), born to a German-Jewish father who had grown up in England, were now deemed unsuitable for exhibition by the Ministry of Culture.” (Angelika Wesenberg, museum-digital.de, accessed September 22, 2026). Provenance: Private collection, Rhineland-Palatinate - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not listed in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
