842 - WUNDERLICH, PAUL (1927–2010) “Great Minotaur” 1989 Bronze, partially green patinated and partially polished. 185 x 29 x 45.5 cm. Signed, dated, and numbered on the edge of the plinth: Wunderlich 89 6/1000. The monumental bronze sculpture “Great Minotaur” ranks among the most iconic major works of sculpture in Paul Wunderlich’s mature oeuvre. The artist, one of the most significant representatives of postwar fantastical-surrealist art, takes up the central mythological motif of the ancient bull-man and translates it into his characteristically elegant, aestheticized formal language. In the masterful juxtaposition of dark-green patinated and highly polished, gleaming gold surfaces, Wunderlich combines primal animalistic power with a cool, aristocratic demeanor. The extremely elongated proportions lend the figure a sacred and at the same time sublime presence. The design ingeniously combines the archaic mythology of antiquity with the precise refinement of Art Deco and 20th-century modern sculpture. The gold-colored sections show minimal staining. Overall in very good, original condition.
