MORENO ROMERA, MIGUEL (1935) "Seated Female Figure" Metal, embossed, directly welded, and chrome-plated. Hands clasped behind the neck. Mounted on a veined white marble pedestal. Total height: approx. 41 cm. The lower part of the metal structure bears the artist’s monogram. This sculpture is a characteristic example of the avant-garde work of the Granada-born sculptor Miguel Moreno Romera from the 1970s and 1980s. Moreno, who came from a prominent Spanish family of goldsmiths, combines the traditional art of metalworking with the expressive formal language of Brutalism in his works. In contrast to his classic bronze castings, this sculpture is distinguished by the masterful technique of direct welding and hammering of sheet metal. The artist uses the welding torch as a sculptural tool: by deliberately melting and cutting through the metal structure, he creates an openwork, filigree lattice. The seated posture of the female figure, with her arms crossed behind her head and her swirling strands of hair, lends the composition an extraordinary dynamism and lightness that blurs the boundary between raw material and elegant poetry.
