Large 12mo Bradel format, ivory vellum with overcover, front cover adorned with an original painting by Louis Jou (signed with his initials) depicting a portrait of Montaigne, with the title calligraphied in black; title running lengthwise on the spine; gilt title, cover, and spine; slipcase and case (Ad. Lavaux.). This edition brings together the following texts: Conversation with M. de Saci on Epictetus and Montaigne; Prayer Asking God for the Proper Use of Illnesses; Discourse on the Passions of Love. ONE OF THE 25 COPIES ON JAPON PAPER, inscribed to Dr. P. Grelletry-Bosviel, featuring a preliminary pencil sketch for the cover, a cover printed on laid paper, and the publication prospectus. Jou notes that his work “features the typefaces I created and am using for the first time.” “…A masterful lesson in typography” (Feuille no. 73). This is Louis Jou’s seventh book.
