Eckersberg, Christoffer Wilhelm Virginia is killed by her father. Pen in gray over pencil, washed in gray; another pencil study on the reverse. 27.5 x 21.2 cm. Inscribed and numbered “C. W. Eckersberg Cat. No. 136” at the lower left. A more elaborate, signed drawing of the same subject was also in the Wolff Collection. It is dated 1804. Between 1803 and 1810, Eckersberg studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. His first major figurative composition, which he executed at the Academy in 1804, also deals with the death of Virginia. It therefore stands to reason that our drawing should also be dated to this early period of Eckersberg’s career. Provenance: From the artist’s estate; his 1854 auction, Lot 136. Benjamin Wolff Collection, Engelholm (Lugt 420). Sold at auction at Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, “The Wolff Collection,” on May 30, 2018, Lot 526. Private collection, Sweden. - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
