The painter and draftsman Jacques-Antoine Vallin was a protégé of the history painter Gabriel Doyen and was trained at the Académie royale in Paris beginning in 1779, while the Ancien Régime was still in place. Vallin was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon, submitting landscapes and seascapes in the style of Vernet and Bidauld, as well as mythological scenes and portraits, to its exhibitions between 1791 and 1827. Before long, the artist made a name for himself with graceful depictions of nymphs and bacchantes in light-filled park landscapes. This sensitively rendered study of a pensive young woman lost in wistful thoughts is characteristic of the aesthetics and elegance of the Directoire period. The focused, delicate line work is perfectly suited to the emotionally charged atmosphere of the scene.
