Ango, Jean-Robert Landscape capriccio with a waterfall. Black chalk. 50 x 24 cm. The painter and draftsman Jean-Robert Ango lived and worked in Rome from 1759 to 1752, where he was supported by Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non and the noble patron Jacques Laure Le Tonnelier, known as le Bailli Breteuil. The artist fell into obscurity for a long time; it was not until the late 20th century that interest in his drawings was revived following the acquisition of four extensive albums of his drawings, which are now in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. Ango likely maintained contact with Hubert Robert, who was also active in Rome, and whose drawing style he closely emulated. For example, several of Robert’s drawings in the Harvard Art Museum have been reattributed to Ango, and numerous drawings by Robert in the Louvre in Paris are now considered questionable. This landscape capriccio captivates with its masterful, precise execution and its tall portrait format, which impressively showcases the picturesque rock formations and the foaming waterfall. The drawing may have served as a preliminary study for decorative wall paneling. The terrace in the upper left and the picturesque tower are undoubtedly inspired by motifs from Tivoli, a perfect evocation of the Italian landscape. Provenance: From the distinguished collection of Henri Baron de Triqueti, Paris (Lugt 1304). - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only indicated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
