Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus "I Hate You" (The Rejection). Brush and pen in gray-brown, pencil, traces of white overpaint, on handmade paper, mounted in places. 14.4 x 8.9 cm. Inscribed by the artist on the lower margin, numbered and paginated on the upper margin. Circa 1780. A carefully inked preliminary drawing for an illustration in Salzmann’s *Moralisches Elementarbuch*, an important textbook in the field of philanthropic pedagogy modeled after Basedow’s *Elementarwerk* (see Lot 6512). The book was used for instruction in early religious education, and Chodowiecki’s engravings contributed significantly to its success. This sheet illustrates a dispute between two brothers stemming from a misunderstanding. It comes from a collection of 67 drawings by Chodowiecki for the *Elementarbuch*, which were auctioned by Prestel in Frankfurt in 1921. Provenance: F. A. C.
